Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge is
on the Texas coast,near to Houston and East Galveston Bay. The 34,000
acre refuge is host to an abundance of wildlife, from alligators to
migratory birds to bobcats.
Visitors can see as many as 27 species of ducks, and geese, bittern,
yellow rail, purple gallinule, marsh wren, egrets, spoonbills, ibis,
teal, and many more birds frequent the refuge.
Shoveler Pond is a 220 acre freshwater
impoundment with an observation platform and a 750 foot walkway out
into the marsh.
Alligators are characterized by a wider snout and
eyes more dorsally located than crocodiles. they are living fossils
which can be traced back 250 million years. Alligators were listed as
an endangered species in 1967, but were removed from the endangered
species list in 1987, after the U.S. fish and wildlife service
pronounced their recovery.
